The Existential Project

"If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

The Existential Project is concerned with those philosophical giants most associated with existentialism.

A Word From Descartes

I thought the following four [rules] would be enough, provided that I made a firm and constant resolution not to fail even once in the observance of them. The first was never to accept anything as true if I had not evident knowledge of its being so; that is, carefully to avoid precipitancy and prejudice, and to embrace in my judgment only what presented itself to my mind so clearly and distinctly that I had no occasion to doubt it. The second, to divide each problem I examined into as many parts as was feasible, and as was requisite for its better solution. The third, to direct my thoughts in an orderly way; beginning with the simplest objects, those most apt to be known, and ascending little by little, in steps as it were, to the knowledge of the most complex; and establishing an order in thought even when the objects had no natural priority one to another. And the last, to make throughout such complete enumerations and such general surveys that I might be sure of leaving nothing out.

Introduction to Existentialism

Existentialism, philosophical movement or tendency, emphasizing individual existence, freedom, and choice, that influenced many diverse writers in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Because of the diversity of positions associated with existentialism, the term is impossible to define precisely. Certain themes common to virtually all existentialist writers can, however, be identified. The term itself suggests one major theme: the stress on concrete individual existence and, consequently, on subjectivity, individual freedom, and choice.

Coming to Terms: Existence and Cyberspace

Coming to Terms: Existence and Cyberspace
Coming to terms with the rapid integration of information technology is exciting as well as difficult. There is much to be gleamed from the increased performance and pragmatic applications of knowledge. The sky is the limit! The information superhighway offers much, but does it offer too much? Implicit in its futuristic promise is a world connected globally, a collective-consciousness accessible to all. While we, as knowledge workers, are being brought closer together, we are also being driven apart. The information superhighway fosters a culture of separateness, a type-of-solipsism. Each individual, on his or her own computer-mobile, speeding through and switching lanes at varying bandwidths, stopping at countless city-sites, with one thing in mind: one’s own interests. It is so easy to subscribe to a social community and unsubscribe. The nature of our electronic interactions seems egoistic, in a certain manner, because of the relative simplistic ability to disengage one’s self from others with relatively little or no consequence.

The Mind: A Universe Unto Itself

Robert Fludd, 17th Century English physician and inventor, theorized that the mind of man was a universe in miniature, as shown in Figure #1.  Fludd's universe was composed of a trinity of God, earth and man.  Man's mind was composed of a corresponding trinity; intellect, imagination and sensation, the three large circles pictured outside the head.  They inside the head to form various parts of the mind.

A Note from K. MARX and F. ENGELS

From On the Freedom of the Press, May 1842

Laws are as little repressive measures directed against freedom as the law of gravity is a represive measures directed against movement, because although it keeps the heavenly bodies in perpetual motion yet it can also kill me if I wish to violate it and dance in the air.

Where law is true law, i.e. where it is the existence of freedom, it is the true existence of the freedom of man.  Thus… Continue

A Note on Time

Time. What is time? Time is any one of a series of moments at which the same or nearly the same thing recurs. That which exists as part of being, has existed, or can logically be conceived of as possessing the potentiality to exist, can only do so in relation to some being’s physical existence. Although time is an abstract… Continue

FAUST'S STUDY

Faust. I've studied now Philosophy
And Jurisprudence, Medicine,
And even, alas! Theology
All through and through with ardour keen!
Here now I stand, poor fool, and see
I'm just as wise as formerly.
Am called a Master, even Doctor too,
And now I've nearly ten years through
Pulled my students by their noses to and fro
And up and down, across, about,
And see there's nothing we can know!
That all but burns my heart right out.
True, I am more clever than all the vain creatures,
The Doctors and Masters, Writers and Preachers;
No doubts plague me, nor scruples as well.
I'm not afraid of devil or hell.
To offset that, all joy is rent from me.
I do not imagine I know aught that's right;
I do not imagine I could teach what might
Convert and improve humanity.

An Education

1.“The only person everybody loves in the world is God.”“And he’s a fictitious character!”Laughter rang out in the empty compartment; empty but for the two men. The train sped by sleeping shanties, for morning was yet to arrive. The city was in a slumber, a disconcerting quiet in an otherwise busycity – like a beehive observant of the swarming traffic coming in and out. Butbeehives are still in the night. The city’s train ran at this time, a sign ofits thudding heartbeat carrying on as the city…See More

Right of hand, what I notice about your tribute is its frequent use of symbols/terms that are laden with content connotations. I am especially interested in the way you layered each line with a mix of meaning and description. "Wheels," the…

A Word From Heidegger

“If I take death into my life, acknowledge it, and face it squarely, I will free myself from the anxiety of death and the pettiness of life - and only then will I be free to become myself.”

From The Myth of Sisyphus

I see many people die because they judge that life is not worth living. I see others paradoxically gettin killed for the ideas or illusions that give them a reason for living (what is called a reason for living is also an excellent reason for dying). I therefore conclude that the meaning of life is the most urgent of questions.
